Betty Cardigan Pattern.
Legend has it that Betty Martin was a Gansey knitter from Filey on the North Yorkshire coast. She gave her name to a simple, textured stitch which can be seen on many Gansey jumpers from this area.
This Gansey inspired cardigan is oversized, with dropped shoulders and useful pockets. It is comfortable and easy to wear, and will be an all year round wardrobe staple.
Betty cardigan is knitted bottom up on circular needles, back and fronts together. The pockets are knitted in as you go. The garment is then split at the underarms and the back and fronts knitted separately to the shoulders. The shoulders are shaped with German short rows and joined together with a 3 needle cast off on the right side which gives a visible seam.
The stitches for the sleeves are picked up from the armhole and the sleeve is knitted in the round down to the wrists.
